Mary Ann Thompson is a native of Southern Maryland and was raised in Leonardtown, MD. 1984, her career began at the Federal Bureau of Investigations, Washington Field Office Division. After five (5) years of commuting from Southern Maryland, in November of 1989, she joined the Corrections Division of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office. With thirty-five (35) years of corrections experience, she now serves as the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center Warden, providing professional guidance and direction in planning, leadership, and management of a 351-bed detention facility, ensuring incarcerated individuals custody, security, and welfare. In addition to the incarcerated population, St. Mary’s County has robust Community Corrections Programs that include Inpatient Treatment, Pre-Trial Supervision, and Day Reporting as alternatives to incarceration.
Responsible for the operation of the facility; preparing and implementing directives, orders and policy statements; ensuring compliance with applicable laws and standards; planning, organizing, and directing the activities of Operations, Classification and Offender Re-Entry, Administrative, and Support Services; develops the facility’s budget for personnel, equipment and capital improvements; improves efficiencies without compromise to the safety and security of both the staff and inmate population; directs, support, and monitor staff in their efforts to meet the Corrections Division mission; assists in developing strategies and resources; maintains knowledge of, enforces, and monitors staff and inmate compliance with applicable rules and regulations and adherence to local, state and federal laws; implements both in writing and verbal directives and assignments issued by the Warden; makes frequent inspections of the facility; responsible for program management of the inmate population; and effective and efficient operation of the detention and rehabilitation center as well as Community Corrections.
